Physiatry / Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physiatry—also called Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation—is a branch of medicine focused on restoring function and quality of life to people with physical or cognitive deficits due to neurological injuries, pain, physical impairments, or disabilities.

Physiatrists work in a multidisciplinary environment. Specifically, they often work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, psychologists, orthotists/prosthetists, and other medical and surgical specialists.

At Pacific Medical Centers, our physiatrists provide comprehensive management of patients with impairments and disabilities due to neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and vascular conditions or injuries. In particular, they aim to foster quality-of-life improvements for patients who need neurological rehabilitation due to:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic or non-traumatic head injury
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Multiple sclerosis and other neuromuscular disorders that affect mobility, gait, and function
  • Neurogenic bowel and bladder problems
  • Spasticity management
  • Adults with congenital neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida

Our physiatrists also provide expert rehabilitation for patients with musculoskeletal disorders, including:

  • Amputation of a limb
  • Spine pain, injuries and degenerative spine disease
  • Joint pain from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or lupus
